STANDARDS

Initially developing standards for the office involved very basic CAD layering and printing conventions. BIM Standards are much more expansive than layer organization. These standards cover issues in detail about developing and managing the project information.

Importance of BIM Standards

Having many parties/stakeholders involved in a single project, BIM standards enables information exchange with minimal loss. It is important for all project stakeholders to commit to one set of BIM standards based on either the client’s requirements or local authority requirements. Standardizing the type and the amount of information (both 3D and 2D) will help keep the model file sizes manageable and accessible at all times.

Using specific Standards

Several BIM standards and guidelines are available on-line, it is important to have the entire team to commit to follow one specific and relevant set of standards or develop one based on the project requirements.

Project specific BIM standards should be developed considering the end goal for the models. This will avoid otherwise abortive modeling and model cleaning activities. Standardizing all aspects of a BIM model for the entire project life-cycle is a complex activity. It is important for the whole project team take part in the process and help define the standards required for their scope of work.

Organizing the BIM Standards based on the target BIM will be ideal. Some of the key BIM Standards that are used for a typical project life-cycle are;
