Building the right skill set is critical for any implementation and it is more important in the case of BIM where the staff is required to learn and adopt to a new working methodology. BIM methodology requires new set of roles and responsibilities to be introduced into the organization to lead and support the implementation and also to carry out the day to day BIM related activities.
BIM TASK FORCE
As a first step towards BIM team building, having a small team of experts as a BIM Task Force will help initiate the process. BIM Task Force is a team of leaders and selected functional staff with existing knowledge and experience in working in a BIM environment.
At a minimum level, the team should be capable of carrying out the following activities;
Research and learn the latest technological advancement in the industry.
Understand the importance and the benefits of BIM implementation and the organization’s vision towards BIM.
Influence the peers to learn and adopt to the new methodologies and maintain the team’s confidence in BIM.
Develop and maintain the organization BIM System including standards, templates and manuals.
Monitor and present the implementation status to the management at defined milestones.
Document the best practice manuals and training manuals for the BIM system specific to the organization.
Conduct both technical and operational training session to the staff through presentations and hand-holding sessions.
Manage and monitor the BIM pilot projects to help test the BIM System and propose amendments as required.
Organize frequent knowledge sharing sessions to update the staff with latest technology and methodologies in practice.
Be the point of contact for all BIM issues with in the organization for both internal and external parties.
BIM Consultants
BIM is a collaborative process and it is important for the external consultants and other stake holders to be BIM capable to carryout a successful BIM project.
Team Work
Every project requires the team to be working towards a single goal with set objectives. BIM work-flows require closer communication with both internal and external team members. An experienced team leader, typically the BIM Director should help provide the required guidance.
