Apart from the commonly used staff retaining strategies in the construction industry, the BIM staff requires special attention given the current market.
Growing the team bottom - up
It is highly recommended to have an internal team trained to become the BIM staff rather than hiring a fully new BIM experienced staff. BIM in the current practice promises quick career growth with new and attractive titles and job responsibilities. The chances of retaining staff is higher by training and promoting a capable BIM Modeler to become a BIM coordinator than to hire a new BIM Coordinator.
Avoid getting the staff to feel stagnant in the team by making sure the team is learning and experiencing new technology on a frequent basis and growing in the team. This can be achieved by organizing frequent knowledge sharing session and also encouraging the team to attend construction events and seminars.
Identifying the right BIM Manager
While a BIM Director can manage the communication between the functional group and the management teams, a BIM Manager plays a critical role keeping the BIM team intact. The right BIM Manager will take the load off of the Coordinators and Modelers by identifying faster and efficient ways to meet the deadlines. BIM Manager will in the right position to bring the issues faced by the modeling teams to the management level, thus providing the level of trust to the modeling teams at critical times.
Salary vs. Scope of work
The current job market for BIM specialized staff promises quick promotions through job hopping. An experienced BIM Modeler will always want to become a BIM Coordinator and eventually a BIM Manager with better salaries. The job hopping can be minimized by giving the promoted staffs with industry standard salary and new scope of work (responsibilities) to learn and grow internally.
