Read MoreNaming Conventions
Standard naming convention for all types of data developed during a project life-cycle will enable easy communication between all stake holders. Working with the external team members to agree up on a standard for all project stages will benefit the project.
File name to communicate
Including the following information into naming convention will help easy identification;
Differentiate project specific files with the help of a common project number for all disciplines.
Incorporate parcel/zone to identify the part of the project being used.
Use Discipline Specific codes to organize each discipline models separately.
Have BIM Use codes to organize integrated models based on the purpose of integration.
Use specific date format or version numbering to ensure that the file being published is the latest.
Naming Convention - Guidelines
Some of general guidelines widely used in the industry for naming conventions are;
Avoid Blank Spaces
Avoid too long and descriptive file names
Avoid too many acronyms and use only well known standards
Use either Underscore “_” or Hyphen “-” to differentiate the information in the name. (Avoid using both)
Avoid using symbols
Avoid using all Upper Case letters for better legibility
