Design development process involves testing of various design options for several critical aspects like sustainability, design concept, buildability, aesthetics, material use etc.
Model Versioning Aspects
BIM enables the team to easily monitor the design changes for each option. However, the BIM Models developed on a daily basis should be versioned properly so that the team can use the appropriate option to publish.
Some of key aspects to consider while working on multiple versions;
Model versions should be properly named and have a separate folder structure.
Having the same documentation file referencing to different model versions will avoid abortive drawing production work.
Model only the information that is required for the design option ( fit for purpose ) as a specific study model whenever possible.
Allot time to produce required project information such as 2D Drawings post the design decisions are made and ready to publish.
Although not recommended, it is common to have 2 different design models progressing parallels especially to meet tight deadlines for authority submissions. Ensure to document all the changes in the model and information that is required to be transferred between 2 versions.
