Quality control plays a big role to ensure success in a high collaborative BIM environment. Quality checking should be carried out at multiple levels by all parties through out the project life-cycle. It is important to have a well documented Quality Analysis & Quality Control plan for both organization level and project level activities.
Process Quality
BIM Process Management requires the team to test and ensure that the used procedures are in line in the BIM Uses and firm’s BIM Goals. Measuring the quality of any BIM process requires quantifiable indicators.
Some of the issues to check for while defining the quality of a process are;
Staff adaptability to the new procedures.
Customer satisfaction on delivery process and communication.
Productivity and efficiency loss vs. gain.
Model Quality
Checking for the quality of BIM Models is the utmost important quality check activity required in a project. BIM Models should be checked for quality both in terms of 3D and the information incorporated broadly classified under 4 categories (Visual Check, Interference Check, Standards Check & Model Check.
It is essential to consider the following issues during the checking process;
Check for the accuracy of 3D geometry and the modeling practices used to avoid interference and duplicate elements in the model.
Check to ensure the right template files are being used and the set file organization structure is strictly adhered to.
Check to ensure that all BIM standards including naming conventions and 2D Graphic standards such as Fonts, Line weights etc. are accurate.
Check to ensure that the information incorporated in the geometry are fit to the purpose based on the LOD Check list and they follow the set standards.
Automated Model Review
Typically, BIM Model tools has in-built features to enable the teams to check for the quality.
Ex. Model Warnings in Autodesk Revit.
However, certain specialty model review software are also currently available in the market with features to check the interference between multiple model elements, rule based design checking etc.
Ex. Solibri Model Checker, Autodesk Navisworks
